Fucking up certain URLs on purpose actually is a good idea, or at least including a noreferrer tag, as otherwise those sites can see where you are coming from when you click their links.

Back in the day (before, during, and after the big FBI anti-piracy Operation Bucaneer circa 1999) warez forums with both FTP and web based warez were huge. It was standard procedure to post all links as follows:

    Or

Nobody did that then. I was a top site courier who mirrored the complete MSDN Developers Network including unlimited volume licensing keys for all of their products at the time.

So don't try any of your usual half baked history bullshit that the kids lap from your hand.

I still use FTP servers to download files from the BBS scene. It's sketchy but works well

Bsck in the day MS IIS came with an FTP server that had anonymous read write permissions. Using command line FTP you ciuld create a directory structure that was inaccessible remotely unless you knew the path abd completely locked out locally.

This was dine by exploiting the fact that Gates ported the Windiws FTP client from Unix/Linux. So you coukd use directiry nanes forbidden in windows like LPT1, COM1, ect...

You wiukd ctmreate a durectiry structure like pub/somestuff/com1/goodstuff_here/

Even with an FTP client unless you knew that com1 was at that part of the fike path all you could see was pub/somestuff as ab empty directory that coukd not be deleted as there was hidden content fyrther diwn the path.

I had a smakl tool someone wrote that coukd discover these hidden paths. I used to create a pubs in a list of customers a friend had in his NYC IT support company, fill it until the severs hard drives were at capacity, and then he woukd call me in Ohio. I would remote in, clean up the danage, and get a cut of his bill. Neither he nor his customers ever knew a thing.

to be fair that's more about the way windows handled system calls than the ftp protocol. I remember back in school you could run c:\CON\CON to lock the system up to the point where laptop buttons were nonfunctional and you had to wait for the battery to die

the whole two ports active/passive thing was a nightmare though

I like FXP, which can transfer files from one server to another from a third location. So you're never actually receiving the files yourself.
