   I'm having the same problem as this person but DOOM 1 and 2 come as part of the same game in Steam, not individually. I can load the wad which isn't the game I want to play but I can't load the pk3 file.

    You don't need to open an *.wad file. A WAD (acronym for "Where's All the Data?") is the file format used by Doom and all Doom-engine-based games for storing data.
    
    You need to place the file in the correct directory for what ever the fuck your trying to play.
    
    If you really want to open a WAD file try LABWAD.
