No but you could use the magnesium to avoid having to extract lithium from batteries for shake and bake.

    also this

There is no aluminium powder in an etch a sketch, that is iron powder. Aluminium is nonmagnetic and as such would not be picked up by the parts of the etch-a-sketch steered by the dials on the corners. As for the uses of aluminium dust there are plenty of other metallothermic reductions which exploit the powerful reductive capacity of aluminium metal, its useful as a general technique for many metals, along with magnesium powder and carbon, aluminothermic, magnesiothermic and carbothermic reductive techniques all share in being high temperature, rapid processes with the capacity for producing intense heat and releasing elements from other compounds of them. Doesn't always have to be metallic either, phosphorus was originally isolated from phosphate, derived from vats of putrefied piss by the alchemyst Hennig Brandt using a modified carbothermic reduction, and collecting the vapor, solidifying white phosphorus from it.

Aluminothermic processes have use in winning metals from mineral ores, in cutting through other metals, in metal casting (such as creating a master mold for the piece one wishes to create, and if in multiple, then a raised jig to create the patterns in casting sand, fill with wax and then pouring over the metal and once solidified, breaking the sand apart and using an abrasive to polish up and eventually if needs be, buffing the product etc.)

Works for plenty of other metals than iron. For example Tsath' successfully prepared some silicon metal starting with acid-precipitated silica prepared from potassium silicate solution and concentrated sulfuric acid, washing out the acid and potassium sulfate and precipitating very fine silica gel, mixing this with fine Al dust (think it was Al at least, might have been Mg, but from the particle size of the metal, most likely to have been the Al) and after placing the mixture in a crucible, ignition using a strip of lithium metal and sticking something over the top of the cap of the crucible)

Whilst there wasn't a massive yield of product, the carbon crucible began, after weighting the lid down, some doubtless vaporized, but the crucible itself began to glow red-orangey in color from the searing heat. There was significant slag, again probably capturing a portion of the product as aluminosilicate slag and the density of the silica itself used was extremely low, this being very lightweight, and of significant bulk for a small weight, even with thorough mixing and mechanical compression)

After the ignition and subsequent extremely exothermic, fairly rapid (more so than any Fe thermite Tsath' ever did, particulate size likely playing a significant part, especially employing 20-30 micron range Al dust) burn, the crucible was allowed to cool some, and then the thing picked up with tongs and dumped into water, predictably sending up gouts of steam, hissing and spitting, and exploiting thermal shock to help break up the tough slag. This was then broken into pieces, and any obvious pieces of shiny, metallic appearing material to be picked out physically, and carefully leached with boiling water, with cold H2SO4 to destroy as much of the slag as possible. The result was several irregularly shaped lumps of solid, very lightweight metal-like material which did not yield hydrogen when treated with moderate conc. H2SO4 and was proved not to be aluminium by exposing it to strong aqueous caustic potash and to NaOH soln. of a more dilute concentration. The material did not react, and the only other metal or metalloid in the reaction other than Na+ and K+ ions.

That is a general outline of how such pyrometallurgical reductions are performed, using a more reactive metal to reduce a compound, frequently an oxide of a less strongly reducing element. The more reactive metal in its elemental state, or sometimes carbon is used, is added to the substrate at a suitable stoichiometric ratio, and ignited, proceeding to use the oxide as its source of oxygen, stealing it from the less reactive element which is then ripped free, accompanied by the emission of extreme heat, in the case of iron oxide/aluminium, a few thousand degrees 'C.

There are many compositions, they encompass certainly the transition metal series, along with a process designed by a guy going by 'nurdrage' online, using magnesium in 1,4-dioxane to reduce NaOH to (along with a fair bit of polymerized glorp formation) to elemental sodium in large quantities, preparing the dioxane using the oldschool condensation method of employing concentrated sulfuric acid as a dehydration agent, to induce an autocondensation-dehydration type of cyclization performed using drain cleaner grade conc. H2SO4, antifreeze ethylene glycol and distillation to prepare the dioxane. That reaction though doesn't involve ignition.

It invariably does in other cases though. Sometimes teflon is used as a fluorine donor in specialized applications such as in infra-red flares as magnesium-teflon-viton mixtures.

Copper oxide thermite is another one that somewhat bucks the trend, in that they are usually relatively fast-burning pyrotechnics which do not explode but burn steadily. Copper oxide thermite using Al (don't know about Mg as the reductant but probably similar) however, is a very very rapid burning thermite and will explode unconfined, vaporising the copper.

Al powder can also be used for hydrogen generation, although it has to be done carefully, because the reaction occurs extremely quickly if fine Al is used, by reaction with NaOH (aqueous solution), and if at all, with a face shield encompassing the full face, goggles underneath, and adding materials portionwise, because it gets hot enough to boil the water and steam and spit, solid Al is better since immersion can be controlled and there is not such a large surface area to react at once.

And in the case of alloys prepared by fusion of aluminium (easiest of course as dusts) and other metals, the secondary metal being something like nickel, for catalytic purposes, extremely finely divided metals can be produced by leaching such bimetallic alloys, typically with a small proportion of a tertiary adjunct metal to enhance and modulate the catalytic properties, and then the aluminium content leached away with sodium or potassium hydroxide solution, leaves behind very finely divided nickel (or other metals) with a high surface area and the potential, with correct preparation and alloy formulation for use in catalytic applications, typically hydrogenation for catalytic reductions in the case of nickel. These alloys can be pyrophoric once prepared and the finely divided metal or metal composite leached free.

These, are known, after their inventor, as 'Raney catalysts' or Raney metals.Raney nickel is the most common, and exists in various grades and forms, some of them airstable, some of them pyrophoric, Raney cobalt is known also, and is AFAIK less active than Raney nickel, Other metals are used as the main non-aluminium content metal in the alloy the Raney metals are prepared from also, but in any case Ni is most common, Co probably the other best known.

And of course, there are also many simple pyrotechnic mixtures employing aluminium as a fuel in combination with various oxidizers, nitrates, perchlorates, permanganate and others besides, these are typically very rapid burning compositions which go off by deflagration rather than detonation, but do so with great speed, sufficient that a fair size (for the composition) of Al dust with a finely divided admixed oxidizer serves as a common flashpowder recipe format, and these compositions in many cases, depending on the oxidizer employed, will explode with minimal confinement or none at all, the weight of the quantity of aluminium pyrotechnic flash comp acting to auto-confine the mixture under its own weight, and provide sufficient 'confinement' for quite a crack.

Ever seen the traditional british firecrackers called 'bangers'? don't know if they are still buyable here due to ever-encroaching governmental trash and the restrictions the fuckers impose, but typically red in color, about 2.5 inches to a little under 3'' or so long and roughly a centimeter, slightly less in outer diameter, quite hard to light fuse? those pack about 50mg of flashpowder inside rolled cardboard casings, with a quite wide, stiff hard to light little plastic wick style fuse, and thats quite enough to make a substantial crack when the flash mixture ignites.

As for the IRON in an etch-a-sketch, there really is not very much of it. And since one wants surplus to stoichiometric quantities for things like nitro group reductions in acidic conditions thats not a great source. Fe powder and Al dust in varying mesh sizes are easily available commercially and at little cost.

I'm just going by what the push content on YouTube was saying.

then that father died plunging to his death. I think he also wore one of those squirrel suits you land in cardboard boxes after flying out of a plane.

My store page will have "no step on snake" flags , ball bearings and pressure cookers.

The pressure cookers are for sterilizing mycology spore jars. The ball bearings are for anarchist revolt agitator activities like filling an entire pressure cooker with them and then dumping them out on the sidewalk during lunch so people trip over them
