I'm re-watching Tokyo Ghoul

Anyone a fan? It's what got me into anime. Not that I'm super into it, I don't really watch much of it but it made me like anime. Before, I hated it. I was expecting a horror anime but it was much more than that, I didn't think it'd get that good. I watched it for the first time back in 2019, I think.

I watched the first season when it came out, read the manga as well. I started the first episode of the second season just recently but feel lost. I wish they'd continued dead man wonderland. It's weird I keep forgetting about this stuff, seems so far away. Oh no flashbacks

Nice! I'm on the second episode of season two now, I plan on watching a season per day so I'll finish season two today. Normally people who read the manga and/or people who watch the anime don't like the live-action movies, but I watched the live-action movies first and then I watched the anime so I like both of them. I haven't read the manga though, the only manga I ever read was Tokyo Revengers and that's only because I didn't want to wait for at least a year to see what's coming next in the Tokyo Revengers universe. Deadman Wonderland, huh? I will be watching that one after I finish Tokyo Ghoul.

Everyone says the first season is the best but I remember liking all of it when I watched it years ago. But you say the first season is just alright, why "alright" and not "good"? So far, everyone I know said Tokyo Ghoul is one of the best anime out there. Which one do you like more? I would have the live-action as well, but knowing you don't even like the anime as much, I doubt you would even remotely enjoy the live-action movies. I guess I just have a soft spot for live-action flicks which is why I don't think they're anywhere as bad as people make them out to be. Hell, I even liked the Attack on Titan live-action movies from 2015 but that's maybe because Miura Haruma (rest in peace) played in it. He had the role of Eren. I never watched the anime and I am not really interested in that one. I do have one of the songs they use in that anime in my Spotify playlist, but that was just pure chance. It's called Red Swan.

My brother and his friends love(d) Tokyo Ghoul and when we hang out together sometimes (everyone's busy, so we don't meet up much -- maybe once a year) and we're driving in the car, they love playing the intro song of the first season. I personally don't like the song that much but the lyrics are nice.

The first season felt like it was trying to faithfully adapt the manga for new audiences, whereas the second season felt like it was made for manga readers who just wanted to see their favorite parts animated. Pacing was kinda dogshit, from what I recall. Maybe I should try rewatching it myself though - I thought the pacing was shit in the third season of Attack on Titan at one point, but it turns out I mostly didn't enjoy because I tried to raw dog it after having mostly forgotten seasons one and two. Maybe I just did the same thing with Tokyo Ghoul. (Although as you say there seems to be some consensus that the second season wasn't great.)

I see, I guess manga readers tend to be more nit-picky about what they like and whatnot. They feel like you have to faithfully adapt it otherwise it's "trash." I don't agree with that mentality, I think it's nice to be uhh... how do you say that... variable. Yeah, that. I would say you should re-watch it yourself, to see if your opinion changed or not. People hate the Attack on Titan live-action because it wasn't faithful to the manga or something but the thing is, the creator of the manga wrote the script or at least helped writing it, so for the fans to slander it is pretty damn stupid. If the creator approves, no one else's opinion should matter.

DMWL is never getting a second season, but the manga was fun and did have an actual ending which was reasonably satisfying.

Re Tokyo ghoul, s2 or square root whatever was pretty weak. The igor looking nigga that made weapons out of children’s bodies was pretty gangster though. Was he s1 or 2?

Oh I'm not a manga reader, that was just... like... the vibe I got - that it probably kept the manga's pacing, and that they were interested in telling the story to a new audience. Not being a manga reader was what I suspect my problem was with season two - felt like I was missing a lot of context to what was going on and they were just jumping between the cool fights (although this is also why I think it's possible that I might have just tried to raw dog it after completely forgetting the first season).

Definitely gonna download it now. I''ve been watching a ton of seasonal anime, but there are a couple slow days this season that only have a couple shows I'm interested in and it drives me crazy. I have become a gigaweeb. It's terrifying.

I'm not a manga reader either, I only read one manga and that was Tokyo Revengers and honestly, I loved it. I might read it again in the future. I don't consider myself to be a weeb even though I casually picked up Japanese (in writing). I'm nowhere near fluent but at least I can read some and that's nice. I can already read the Persian/Arabic/Urdu script and now all three Japanese betabets as well. My brother says I'm a bigger weeb than he is because I'm able to read Japanese, even though he reads a ton of manga and watches lots of anime. I disagree that I'm a weeb. I'm not that much into anime anyway. But since I have lots of time to kill I may watch more, so I'll add Deadman Wonderland to my watching list.

I just stream the anime I watch, try aniwave.to -- that's where I'm watching Tokyo Ghoul from. Tokyo Ghoul:re is season three and season four, I believe. Tokyo Ghoul√A is season two and Tokyo Ghoul is season one. Just out of curiosity, which torrent site do you use?

Season two is Tokyo Ghoul√A, I don't recall any Igor character and I recently watched season one (yesterday) so I assume he's from season two. I'm on episode two as of now and he hasn't been introduced yet.

I'll add it to my watchlist! If you'd like I'll let you know what I think once I've finished it. Probably this week or the next. I like philosophy so I assume that's what this is about? Sort of anyway.
