A lot was lost to the Eternal September...
-
2023-07-23 at 11:37 AM UTC(I imagine, anyway. I wasn't there. Long before my time.)
But totse? It survived. Flourished. It couldn't have existed as it did for most of us (at least those of us who were "there, man") without the Eternal September. So with that in mind, it's kind of a poetic justice that the thing that seemingly eroded Jeff's sense of purpose with the site - the thing that ultimately robbed him of his conviction in the ideals that kept totse alive for 20 years and brought him to finally pulling the plug on it - was the Eternal June (I'm coining this phrase, if it hasn't been minted by another already). The Eternal Summer Vacation.
Jeff closed the forum registrations a lot. Every summer they'd get a "tsunoobie". This was also before my time. Basically, every summer a tidal wave of bored kids, freshly off school and looking to make trouble, would find their way to the site and shit up the forums with their childish retardation. He'd leave regs closed for a while, and only periodically reopen them. Eventually, I think he realized this was unsustainable and that massive periodic influxes of retarded immigrants - even if tightly controlled - had a profoundly detrimental effect on the quality of the community he wished to build. So, like Donald Trump, he built a wall. He closed regs in 2006, and I don't think they ever reopened. But before he did that, at some point in late February if I'm not mistaken (I wanna say 2-23), I joined the forums. During the last, brief period in which they were open, I hit the registration link and it worked. The last "tsunoobie", of a sort. I was there for that one. I was part of it. I got in the very last time Jeff opened registration for the forums.
Apparently he regretted it. Understandable. In the 3ish short years I visited those forums, I shot to being the user in ~60th place for "most hours clocked on the forum". I was 15-18 at the time. You can safely assume that means nothing I said had any merit or value (not much has changed), because it didn't beyond occasional (and usually accidental) comedic value. The closest I came to saying something that did have value was a thread I made in a transparent attempt to be modded in a newly minted forum. Pathetic.
I was the cancer that killed totse.
I killed the thing I loved and respected. It may still be the thing I respect most, out of all the... things... in terms of its ideals. As cringe and Gen X and 'Rage Against the Machine'-tier edgy as the content was, and as retarded as the userbase ended up being (in no small part as a result of my diligent efforts), that ideological core of freedom of speech/data/information/knowledge that seemingly motivated Jeff in the project initially was pure gold. It profoundly shaped my worldview and had an outsized influence on who I became as a person. And that's completely disregarding all the other, more tangible and concrete ways in which the community's existence shaped me as a person. I've... huh, yeah, I guess that's true: I've literally never dated outside this community. It's how I met the guy from whom I scored my first psychedelics. First loves and first psychedelics, all in the same place, and if those aren't good enough to be shorthand for 'profoundly impactful life experiences' I don't know what would qualify.
I basically don't talk to anyone from back then, really.
Or maybe they don't talk to me.
I killed the thing they loved when I killed the thing I loved. I killed the thing that made me, and made us. I'm a monster.
There's no blood on my hands, there was no massacre, but I'm a monster. I have ash on my hands. My retarded peers and I, by not getting bored with his site and disappearing, unknowingly incited Jeff to burn it all down in the face of our relentless, persistent, profound mental retardation. The Great Library at Alexandria for the kinds of recipes that'd get you put on a watchlist and blow your hands off if you actually followed them as written. The Baghdad House of Wisdom, minus the wisdom, with a whole lot of angst and a moderate helping of knowledge in its place. Gone. Because of us. Because of ME.
Anyway I literally only made this thread because I thought the Eternal June was a cool concept, and that it was... extensible. Maybe the same thing happened in a lot of places as internet adoption became more ubiquitous. The internet has died in stages, been reborn in cycles. The Eternal September which saw USENET faced with an endless tide of retards as ISPs started getting folks online, and its echo in the Eternal June during which those retards' retarded children started posting en masse all the time (rather than just during summer vacation).I'm not sorry about how long this is, and I'm equally not sorry that I spent most of those words on rambling and waxing poetical about my favorite long dead forum.
I don't care. Read it or don't. It's probably not worth your time. Nothing here is.
You suck.
Regards,

Echo Name : NNSTUFF - General Discussion and Chatting
Moderators : All NIRVANAnet™ Sysops
Last Updated : January 25, 1996
Distribution : NIRVANAnet™
If you have any additions or changes to these messages, send Taipan
Enigma @ 9:900/0 netmail with your modifications. If you want to
moderate a topic, send netmail.
These subject definition messages will be posted once a month
automatically. The idea is to:
* Help new users figure out what the fuck is going on.
* Give moderators credit where credit is due.
* Give people ideas on what to post and where.
This is the general discussion and chat echo. People can discuss just
about anything they want to in this area.
How to Argue Effectively:
I argue very well. Ask any of my remaining friends. I can win an
argument on any topic, against any opponent. People know this and
steer clear of me at parties. Often, as a sign of their great respect,
they don't even invite me. You too can win arguments. Simply follow
these rules:
* Drink liquor.
Suppose you are at a party and some hotshot intellectual is expounding
on the economy of Peru, a subject you know nothing about. If you're
drinking some health-fanatic drink like grapefruit juice, you'll hang
back, afraid to display your ignorance, while the hotshot enthralls
your date. But if you drink several large martinis, you'll discover
you have STRONG VIEWS about the Peruvian economy. You'll be a WEALTH
of information. You'll argue forcefully, offering searing insights and
possibly upsetting furniture. People will be impressed. Some may leave
the room.
* Make things up.
Suppose, in the Peruvian economy argument, you are trying to prove
that Peruvians are underpaid, a position you base solely on the fact
that YOU are underpaid, and you'll be damned if you're going to let a
bunch of Peruvians be better off. DON'T say: "I think Peruvians are
underpaid." Say instead: "The average Peruvian's salary in 1981
dollars adjusted for the revised tax base is $1,452.81 per annum,
which is $836.07 before the mean gross poverty level."
NOTE: Always make up exact figures.
If an opponent asks you where you got your information, make THAT up
too. Say: "This information comes from Dr. Hovel T. Moon's study for
the Buford Commission published on May 9, 1982. Didn't you read it?"
Say this in the same tone of voice you would use to say, "You left
your soiled underwear in my bathroom."
* Use meaningless but weighty-sounding words and phrases.
Memorize this list:
Let me put it this way
In terms of
Vis-a-vis
Per se
As it were
Qua
So to speak
You should also memorize some Latin abbreviations such as "Q.E.D.",
"e.g.", and "i.e." These are all short for "I speak Latin, and you
don't."
Here's how to use these words and phrases. Suppose you want to say,
"Peruvians would like to order appetizers more often, but they don't
have enough money."
You never win arguments talking like that. But you WILL win if you
say, "Let me put it this way. In terms of appetizers vis-a-vis
Peruvians qua Peruvians, they would like to order them more often, so
to speak, but they do not have enough money per se, as it were. Q.E.D."
Only a fool would challenge that statement.
* Use snappy and irrelevant comebacks.
You need an arsenal of all-purpose irrelevant phrases to fire back at
your opponents when they make valid points. The best are:
You're begging the question.
You're being defensive.
Don't compare apples to oranges.
What are your parameters?
This last one is especially valuable. Nobody (other than engineers and
policy wonks) has the vaguest idea what "parameters" means.
Here's how to use your comebacks:
You say: As Abraham Lincoln said in 1873…
Your opponent says: Lincoln died in 1865.
You say: You're begging the question.
You say: Liberians, like most Asians…
Your opponent says: Liberia is in Africa.
You say: You're being defensive.
* Compare your opponent to Adolf Hitler.
This is your heavy artillery, for when your opponent is obviously
right and you are spectacularly wrong. Bring Hitler up subtly. Say,
"That sounds suspiciously like something Adolf Hitler might say," or
"You certainly do remind me of Adolf Hitler."
So that's it. You now know how to out-argue anybody. Do not try to
pull any of this on people who generally carry weapons.
Rules of this echo:
* Nothing can be off-topic in this echo since there
is no topic. However, if there is a far more *appropriate*
echo for your subject, take your message there.
* Don't take things to seriously.
* If you are intoxicated at any time, you MUST call the
closest NIRVANAnet™ BBS and post a message in this
echo AT ONCE, just to let everyone know how great you feel.
* Post the morning after too.
* Remember that if you stay intoxicated, you will never have
a hangover.
* Stay intoxicated. That is, stay intoxicated if you already are
intoxicated, and if you are not already intoxicated, then get
intoxicated! Unless, of course, you don't want to.
* Tri two spel thngs kerectly whin posybell.
* Messages pertaining to, or encouraging, illegal activities,
including, but not limited to, hacking, "phreaking," and software
piracy, are tolerated as long as there isn't something illegal in
them, but really, that stuff is generally too goddamn boring anyway.
* "Flaming" of other participants is discouraged. Please be
tolerant of others' views and opinions, no matter how much they
differ from your own. Unless someone really pisses you off or
something – then fry'm IN THE FLAME ECHO!
* Real names are discouraged. If, however, you ABSOLUTELY MUST
use your real name, then sign your messages using your handle.
* ANSI graphics prohibited, because they won't get through the
Gateway anyway.
* Unsolicited advertisements of any kind, including BBS
advertisements are boring. This ain't the "want ads" echo.
* Sysops carrying this echo must change the name of the echo
frequently and without warning, otherwise the users might figure
out what is going on.
* If you can't think of anything nice to say, say something confusing.
* Disregard these rules.
In addition, please follow these conventions when posting messages:
* Use English if you can't think of a better language.
* Please use as much foul language as possible.
* When specifying phone numbers, remember that this conference is
broadcast all over the universe, so please include area codes.
* Don't tell someone that they're posting a message in the wrong
area unless you're a NN sysop, otherwise NN will start to
resemble a topic-enforcer hellnet. If the people who provide
the net's workings don't care that a message is off-topic, why
should you?
* Use upper and lower case if your computer is capable of so doing.
Normal usage is easier to read, and using all upper case is
generally considered to be SHOUTING, which, of course, is rude.
However, ultimately, nobody gives a flying fuck.
If anyone is found breaking one or more of the conference rules, punitive
actions will be taken. These can range from a simple warning to, in extreme
cases, branding with a hot iron and heavy flogging.
These rules will be posted once in awhile, maybe.

Okay, that's a lie - who doesn't consider it at some point or another? We ~all know how to write, and we more or less do it every day, so it's simple enough to find opportunities to think "why don't I just do this... but more? super easy!". It's not easy. Being a writer sucks the big doo doo. End of the day, I'm just another autistic xillennial douchebag who'd be writing some retarded sci-fi I consider 'high concept' or whatever - that kinda shit with no soul and awkward dialogue because I've only genuinely connected with ~1 person for each decade of my existence and do not know what human relationships are actually like.
I just like fucking with language, and making it do fun things that sound neat to me. That's all. OP features some very purple prose... I think. Some of it must meet the criteria. Surely. Well, as long as we understand purple prose to mean 'pretentious' + something akin to 'chewing the scenery' in acting, but for writing. Schizos in Half Baked can get away with writing like that, but that shit don't fly for writers.

Hmm well I read "John Lanny's" manifesto and introduction of the political theory of Communism and I thought his framing of communism as software with each "type" of communism being like a github repo was a very interesting take on the matter and not overtly ideologically focused like most political rags nowadays , as someone not well versed in classic communism myself I can see the arguments put forth by the more extreme leanings of it and can see that at the end of the day, we aren't all that different and it's a lot more fleshed out than just WORKERS OF THE WORLD and touches on a lot of things I think relate to what is talked about here a lot. almost as if someone took a robot ,scanned robots.txt (without honoring it ofc) and sumemrized it all into a political theory!!! wild!
