FBI Busts 4chan Man For Extreme Couponing (Smokinggun Also Has His Photo)
MAY 11--A college student--and 4chan enthusiast--was named today in a felony complaint charging him with the illegal online distribution of counterfeit coupons that were designed to look like legitimate ones made available through a marketing firm owned by Rupert Murdoch%E2%80%99s News Corporation.
Lucas Henderson, a 22-year-old Rochester Institute of Technology student, is facing a pair of federal felony charges--wire fraud and trafficking in counterfeit goods--for allegedly posting counterfeit coupons on zoklet.net.
Henderson, pictured at right, is also accused of directing users of that message board to 4chan, where they could download a copy of "How to Make Coupons,%E2%80%9D a 45-page tutorial on designing coupons that would %E2%80%9Cscan at most any store in the U.S.,%E2%80%9D thus tricking retailers.
The manual opens with a page listing "The 6 Commandments of Coupon Making,%E2%80%9D including the admonition that the tutorial not be uploaded %E2%80%9Cto any permanent hosting.%E2%80%9D Instead, the document should be shared on %E2%80%9Canonymous image boards%E2%80%9D (like 4chan) where %E2%80%9Cposts expire after a period of time.%E2%80%9D Placing the tutorial at a permanent online location %E2%80%9Cmakes it much easier for companies and moral assholes to come across them and warn stores about them.%E2%80%9D
In a phone interview, Henderson said he would %E2%80%9Crather not say anything at this time.%E2%80%9D Though he appeared this afternoon in federal court in Rochester, Henderson seemed shocked to learn from a reporter that details of the FBI probe were now public, and he voiced concern about his future ability to secure employment.
According to a U.S. District Court complaint sworn by FBI Agent Andre Cicero, the bureau has been probing the distribution over the Internet of counterfeit coupons designed to look like ones offered on smartsource.com, which is produced by News America Marketing, a subsidiary of Murdoch%E2%80%99s media conglomerate.
FBI agents identified Henderson by tracking an IP address captured on the zoklet.net servers (the address was provided to investigators by the message board%E2%80%99s operator). In mid-March, when an agent sought a search warrant for Henderson%E2%80%99s Rochester apartment, the investigator indicated that federal probers had been keeping an eye on 4chan. Agent Barry Couch referred to %E2%80%9CFBI agents%E2%80%99 observation of posting activity on the 4chan Website.%E2%80%9D
As agents raided his home, Henderson was asked about 4chan, he %E2%80%9Cindicated that he had heard of it, had visited it, and had probably posted messages on it in the past.%E2%80%9D In response to FBI queries about the production of coupons, the complaint notes, Henderson stated, %E2%80%9CI did write the manual. I wrote what I could. I thought it was an interesting thing.%E2%80%9D
According to RIT%E2%80%99s web site, Henderson, a Texas native, is studying for a degree in information security and forensics. He expects to graduate next year and is %E2%80%9Clooking for a job in the field of Computer Security.%E2%80%9D -

Harper Reed (born March 21, 1978) is the Director of Software Development for PayPal.[2] In 2011, he took the role of CTO for Barack Obama's 2012 re-election campaign.[1] From 2005 to 2009, he was the CTO of clothing company Threadless, and from 2012 to 2015, he was the CEO of Modest, Inc.[1]
Besides his claims of technical accomplishments, Reed is known for his punk-rock hair-style.[3][4][5] He has subtitled himself as "pretty awesome" and "pretty much one of the coolest guys ever".[6]
According to The Guardian, Reed's "background in crowd-sourcing and cloud-computing ... gives a significant clue to what the Obama team hoped to achieve in 2012".[7]

Early life and education[edit]
Reed was born in Greeley, Colorado, where he was raised in a home without a television but with an Apple IIC. Reed served as student-council president at Greeley Central High School.[8] Reed graduated from Cornell College in 2001[9] with degrees in philosophy and computer science.[10] Reed's first job out of college was as an engineer for World Book Publishing.[8] Reed is an avid reader [11] and currently lives in Chicago with his wife, Hiromi Nakazawa.[6][12]
2012 American Presidential Campaign[edit]
Reed served as Chief Technology Officer for Obama for America from April 2011 through the November 2012 election.[1][13][14][15] A central component of that work was Project Narwhal, a centralized database of electoral information.[16] Reed helped build a team of developers from tech companies like Twitter, Google, Facebook, Craigslist, Quora, Orbitz and Threadless. This approach— hiring technology workers from the tech startups rather than the political realm— was novel.[17] -

With his red beard and gauged earrings, Harper Reed doesn’t look like a prominent force in President Obama’s world. But back in 2012, Reed was hired as the chief technical officer for Obama’s re-election campaign.
While working there his major responsibility was controlling Project Narwhal, which got voter information to Obama campaign workers from across the country.
He had never done anything like that before, but knew he could do the job, he writes in a new post on Medium.
Why? “I attribute that confidence to my experience as a hacker and the subsequent willingness to take risks,” he writes. “If you never break through that wall of doubt, you will never see what might’ve been possible.”
Harper started hacking early on in his life, finding a gateway to forbidden knowledge in pre-Internet Bulletin Board Systems (BBS). He got in trouble for helping a classmate find a copy of the "Anarchist Cookbook"—which the classmate promptly used to blow up a $20,000 haystack.
Harper says he has never stopped thinking about himself as a hacker. And he says that’s where his whole career started: those bulletin boards, the concept of breaking in somewhere.
And Harper hasn’t just broken into the political world. He held the job of CTO of the online clothing company, Threadless form 2005t to 2009. Currently, he’s CEO at the e-commerce startup Modest.
But no matter where he goes, Reed credits hacking culture with guiding his path. “It seemed like the world was somehow brighter, the greens were greener,” he writes. He was never going back. -
