    It's remarkable how the blue checkmark has served as big tech's subsidy to shitlibs and jedis.

    It had nothing to do with identification, for instance alt-right burger-enjoyer Richard Spencer lost his blue checkmark because twitter wanted to show they disapproved of him (but seemingly weren't allowed to ban him).

    Currently the blue check-mark is a sign of 'prestige'; you have to prove you're important enough to get one and their process is completely arbitrary. Twitter is essentially able to appoint teacher's pets and give their compact shitposts more weight than anyone else's - now I suspect they'll just charge $20 and ask people to provide ID for verification; because it's now open to anyone the checkmarks won't make Twitter's Chosen People feel special anymore so I can see a shitload of kvetching if/when it happens.

    it's like letting people buy their achievements in a game, where previously only good players could win. i guess you're right, it does devalue the check mark, but i'd bet not so much that existing check mark holders care to the tune of $240/year.

    i'll look at it as a proxy for how egotistically retarded people are. i mean, it's not a huge sum of money, but it's also a pointless gain for most people.
