    Wrong...again!

    There should be a valve near your water meter that will shut down all of the water to the place. If it is easier to turn that off, you won't need to turn off the valves under the sink. You will still need to open your sink faucet to relieve any pressure before making repairs.

    If you get leaks from the shut-off valves under the sink (or at the water meter whole house shut-off valve), all you normally need to do to stop it from leaking is to tighten the packing nut around the valve stem with a Crescent wrench.
