Stanford Cardninals was its original spelling but its spelled like the bird Cardinal. but a Cardninal or Cardinal is also a tree.
the first n is silent and it became confused with the Bird. which is why Stanford has a Tree instead of a Cardinal bird as its team logo.

So Cardinal I guess is just the way they now spell all forms. The Priest type, The Bird type (Which is its proper way) and the Tree type. but the Tree and the Priest type were originally spelled Cardninal which is dated. even my auto correct wants to rid it.
