Is it BAD to be addicted to a drug?

    Is it?

Even when its physically safe I've always felt like I'm stuck on some ball and chain. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't survive a whole year completely sober... but should I? Is that even ideal?

Yes. It's very easy to quit drugs, just don't buy them. If you have an anxiety disorder a drug addiction is much more difficult because if you want to never run out you gotta deal with some sketchy folx.

    Easy short term solution

    But wait months and years

    Mindset doesn't change.

with controlled substances -- if you have a permanent, debilitating issue affecting your quality of life to the point where you can't work, carry on a conversation or even concentrate on reading a book -- then i see no issue being addicted/dependent on them -- as long you aren't drinking on them -- all should be well.

How can you be sure it is debilitating tho?

I feel like for most people, drugs are a self-fulfilling prophecy of inadequacy. You start out in your teens/young adult years with some kind of problem, and then self-medicate to solve that problem without realizing that it actually adds to the psychological contrast of good/bad. Once you start doing drugs, everything is experienced in extremes. Your idea of normality fades away when you're high everyday. Do we really have mental illnesses that need medication, or are we just putting a band aid over it and hoping it heals without antibiotics and regular washing?

I mean I have no idea what my anxiety or depression was like at 13 when I started using drugs

I just started using to cope and then, well

    now I'm here.

maybe I would have been better off without them? Some people live their whole lives without getting severely intoxicated or developing addictions. They seem to still be happy. Maybe I could've been like that too.

Yes, because of withdrawals and such the old 1960´s adage of ¨If the drug doesn´t get you, the addiction will¨ becomes true. it is true.

If you can manage it, find your favourite drug and limit yourself to once a week, on a Friday or a Saturday. I used to have massive substance abuse and self control issues. Now I never take anything when I have work (or any other commitment) the next morning, and never take anything two days in a row. At present it's usually just a half/quarter Xanax or some vodka on a Friday night, *very* occasionally both, but never more. If something comes up I skip and don't fret or look for another window to use. There's always next time. But if you can't maintain this sort of hyper-vigilant rigid discipline then you'll bottom out or start fucking your life up. Don't be addicted. It is bad.

You're only addicted if you buy more so if you buy an ounce of crack you can't really say OH MAN I'M A HARDCORE DRUG ADDICT if that's the first time you bought it.
