You know what sounds like someone damaged you for life?
Actively not doing something because you think it will result in some abstract win for the other guy in your head. That sounds like they mentally affected your behaviour so hard that you'll never fuck with them again.
In fact it is exactly the kind of rationalization someone who got beaten and has no chance of vengeance would give.

only if this was the movies instead of real life. its all about a cost benefit analysis. is investing so much time, effort, resources and risk of spending decades in prison worth it? just to... what? satisfy some emotional impulse for an hour at best and then go back to being poor and unhappy, now having a much larger burden on your shoulders because the law is on your tail.
not to mention fucking up your mental health.
