it was lost for the same reason most wars of aggression are; the cost (economic and political) of continuing the war became too high.
the US likes to talk about the Viet Cong as the bogeyman, but the most serious loss was something like 10,000 aircraft to the PANV's use of new soviet AA hardware and doctrine (ie. effective layering of SAM sites and flak; using the threat of SAMs and radar checks to force aircraft down into the range of strategically hidden AA guns). -
2021-01-08 at 5:04 AM UTCYes, I heard since Vietnam war, that caused the USA to boost it's Military Strength year after year. except during the Carter era. they wanted him out.
look at us now. but now look at russia. they still have the fastest fighter jet. not sure how it maneuvers but it can pull away from even the fastest Jet we have.. which I read was still an old 50s era?
meh I don't know shit about arms. I might start reading up and making models -

US has a lot more modern aircraft than Russia and the F35 would probably be more effective than the SU57 if all the bugs were ironed out. combat doctrines and design directions are different though, for example US puts a lot more emphasis on stealth tech whereas Russia is more concerned with agility. both are trying to employ networking to allow multiple weapons systems to work in conjunction - the US has a project to sync fire control and targeting between the F35 and surface ships (ie. extending the effective range of missile carriers), Russia is developing drones that autonomously fly in formation to defend the more expensive fighters
I'm not too concerned with fighter jet technology though, I think their role is going to be largely supplanted by much lower-cost networked drone swarms as time goes on -
2021-01-08 at 5:20 AM UTCPS. I have a hard time analyzing what China does because their releases are too often insane and unreliable, and when the US talks about them they're either denigrating Chinese engineering or exaggerating it to talk them up as a threat
