Why did websites used to have introductory pages

   Like when you went to,a site it would have a oage that said enter or had a flash animation
   
   Why have the first page be a useless link to thr site rather than just taking people directly to the majn site

   companies used to do it because they wanted to show off the flashy logo animation without it sucking up bandwidth on every page
