when I got a bit older I started to see that people only wanted 'peace' when they had already won; it's all good and well to clamour for it when you've already asserted dominance so you don't need to protect your gains
now I don't think people really want it at all. people want to avoid suffering themselves but taking it and wielding it are a necessity for any real development, like a seed that needs fire to sprout -

edit: a few more words about violence
there is but one necessary state for man which always entails violence: solitariness & this is his default condition in the state of nature, so fuck off aristotle. his conceiving of society as desirable in any sense is begotten of his lonely, hungry challenges meeting in his first meetings a vision of reaping advantage from others' efforts & withholding his contribution from them for his benefit. this is the core of our inspiration for togetherness & especially for government.
as you've insinuated, there's an undeniable ethic in this gratifying hedonism of the organism which succeeds by violence & its supreme viability depends on a willing capacity to create violence. moving away from the concrete view of why we're violent by nature, i'll now suggest that violence is a process of substantive refinement for nature. our cultivation of the means to violence is ever thriving, defining the scope of lethality's concept utterly beyond the horizons of any being which doesn't profess to die last.
each of us goes into the arena alone & we all do the same thing there like every other volitional organism. for how many instances of autonomous agency running or eating at any given time does nature reserve a unique violent experience (including her agonizing death) in terms of subjectivity as a matter of the interdependence of entities within her domain? that number measures the reach of our arms around one another & it's an expression of true togetherness.
before i fail to give you that number, i'll say that violence is a byproduct of life, though we can observe what looks like it otherwise; nature's death in terms of our subjectivity exists for us as such because death doesn't exist otherwise, only decay in myriad lovely states. i don't have a fucking number for you, my fucking god can you imagine when they do know that though. then we'll each get a number.
