But people who always say 'don't hike or swim alone' are the type who don't go hiking or swimming. Lots of safe places you can go and not risk drowning or getting lost as long as you aren't completely retarded.
It's like how people say "don't play with fire" but then spend hundreds on sending elaborate fire bombs to explode in the sky because it looks pretty. Really no different than a kid burning a toilet paper roll soaked in gasoline. The difference is the precaution you take beforehand to make sure it's safe.
