Tipping's an unfair practice because it allows business to push the risk of fluctuating sales onto servers (ie. a business is allowed to pay someone below or at minimum wage on the assumption that they can make the difference up in tips, which is wholly dependent on how well the business does in general) and because there are plenty of non-service industry workers at or below minimum wage without the capacity to earn tips.

Any push to change the system cannot come from the servers themselves because in many areas, minimum wage is not a living wage and they are fully dependent on tips (like shift workers are often dependent on overtime) to support themselves and their families - even if they consider better wages without the ability to claim tips (which they may not agree with anyway), they need the money in the short-term. The only way change can feasibly come is if customers begin to refuse to tip en masse, which will cause servers to either leave the industry or petition to change the way their wages are paid, which will lead to small/medium businesses to feed their grievances up the chain

That would never happen people in the "industry" would never just quit like that and the thing you left out is how I mention people work for tips.. like if you give good service you get better tips the more you work. It's capitalism at its finest. Resteraunts here would be a lot shittier with out tips. bottom line

not everyone is a low baller, I've gone to the circuit of americas a couple of times for shows and people dont tip but their charging you an astronomical price for their bullshit shots but people will pay it one way or the other

that's exactly why the majority of service employees would be against removing (mandatory) tipping; why any force for change would have to come from the customers.

most places don't do mandatory tipping here, just high class places for tix over like 200 or something. most people here like tipping people that do a good job. I know I do. People that tend to not tip are really ghetoo people, funny story tho that gont vaporwave met with me here in austin and we went to go eat and I went to the bathroom after putting my cash on the table for the meal and tip and when I came out he was hiding outside because he didn't want the lady to see he didn't tip lolol

thats a fact…not an opinion. ive had that discussion with many 'servers' that stated niggers dont tip.

pretty much this the only people that have never tipped me were black people more so black older ladies and they would always have something weird to bitch about, some peoples kids.. one black chicken had to tell her mom to shut the fuck up one time lol

First of all the a federal government requires a wage of at least $2.13 per hour be paid to employees who receive at least $30 per month in tips. If wages and tips do not equal the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour during any week, the employer is required to increase cash wages to compensate. The vast majority of states have similar laws to make employers of tipped employees meet their higher then federal miniumum wage requirements should tips fall short.

But let's say we get every person in the world to just stop tipping period. What would happen is this. First a lot of families would struggle to eat during a long period until employers had to rasie wages to fill needed positions. Before employers even volunteered to raise wages they would be forced to by law. Now they have to things thay can do to maintain an operable profit. They can cut staff and give you shittier service or they can raise the prices on the menu. Now instead of paying well for great service or poorly for poor service you pay a higher price with no incentive for great service on the part of the server. So even if they volunteer to raise wages beyond state and federal requirements or the employees demand the higher non-tipped wage you lose. But you know who else loses? The server. Yup that's right, a slightly an average server in a average spot usually makes well beyond minumum wage for non-tipped employees between wages and tips. A great server in a really good spot can put down some really good bank well above miimum wage. Overall people working in the food services industry would take a big pay cut if they had to work for normal minumum wage with not tips and you would pay more for the same meal with crappier service.

Speedy, it's up to the employees to negotiate wages with their employers. They shouldn't have to negotiate wages with the customer.

Again it's only in America tipping happens. Rest of the world does fine without it. So can America.

no offense brah but you have never worked in that industry so you really don't know what you're talking about you're over simplifying it. Plus I still don't see whats wrong with tipping

That's just a hasty opinion. Try arguing some counter points to my points.

I'd rather tip at McDonalds than most fancy places. Those guys deserve it more. Your average server can easily double their wages. So don't complain about tipping. They also don't work having to carry heavy shit and breathe in dust all day. I never got a tip for doing that. Why the fuck should they give a tip for bringing me food? If they're really paid below minimum wage because of tipping - include it on the menu, tipping is mandatory.
