You don't need a doctor, you need a noose.

psychologist or psychiatrist? the former is more like a counsellor/therapist, the latter mostly just prescribes drugs.
either way you should be able to get an appointment directly with either; for basic psych stuff (I can't sleep/I have anxiety problems etx.) you can usually see your local GP, and if it's too complicated or if it requires an unusual or controlled prescription they'll give you a referral to a psychiatrist.

I think it just depends on your insurance. You can go wherever you want but insurance might require a referral to cover specialists. So they're the ones to ask. If you're like me and you're never sure exactly what all your benefits are, it might also be worth checking if you have access to therapy or counseling outside of your medical. I'm not sure what it is but sometimes I have a separate thing that says I can call and chat up a shrink four times a year or something like that.

Psychologists are the researchers. They aren't necasserily doctors and therefor can't prescribe drugs in most cases.
Neurologists are doctors who can prescribe drugs but they don't have a couch to lay down on.
.
Psychiatrists are doctors who combine both fields and determine if medication is needed to get you on a level where you are able to be dealt with.
