Battle in the Baltics 1944-45: The Fighting for Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, a Photographic History

„ Battle in the Baltics 1944 - 1945 is an exclusive insight into the last frantic months of the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS on the Eastern Front 1944 - 1945. From mid-August 1944 there was nothing but a drum-beat of defeats for the German Army as it fought to the grim death to try and hold back the overwhelming might of the Russians from reaching the borders of the Reich. It was in the Baltic`s where Army Group North played a decisive role in trying to stem the rout and preventing the fragile lines from finally being smashed to pieces.

Drawing on a host of rare and unpublished photographs accompanied by in-depth captions, the book provides a revealing insight into the last desperate months of the war. It reveals in detail how the remnants of Army Group North were driven back across a scarred and devastated wasteland to the borders of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, East Prussia and Pomerania. What followed was the Battle of the Baltic`s where exhausted and undermanned German forces fought to almost near extinction against the constant hammer blows of Soviet ground and aerial bombardments.

Everywhere disintegrating German forces tried to cling onto vital ground. Eventually after many precious German Panzer and infantry divisions were encircled and annihilated the remnants of Hitler`s once vaunted force was pushed back through the Baltic states into East Prussia, and then fought to the death in the last few small pockets of land surrounding three ports: Libau in Kurland, Pillau in East Prussia and Danzig at the mouth of the River Vistula. It was here that the final battle of the Baltic`s would take place where German troops were ordered to `stand and fight` and wage an unprecedented battle of attrition.”

in the short of it. Russia had teamed up with Germany in 1939. and Stalin didn't know Hitler was going to fuck him over TWICE. Hitler made a deal to share Poland with Russia but it was so Hitler could get closer to the Russian front. Stalin thought Hitler wouldn't be crazy enough to fuck him over and move into Russia. he got one warning and ignored it. the second time, Russia was force to fight in its most brutal battle in its history of existence.

And Hitler thankfully was retarded enough to try and do it. it cost him the war and then his life by Russian Forces.

or so the story goes. I still wonder if he ever made it over to Argentina or even Mexico. lol Maybe he ended up dying in Texas somewhere.

Sorry, Russia didn't do it on their own. The battle of the Buldge pushed back and forth in both Hitler and Stalins favor for 4 fucking years.

and the aid of Allies bombing the shit out of Omaha Beach and such was at least the end of Germany and Russia's World War involvement and could of just became a war between the two nations if everyone left.

I didn't want to undermind the "Longest Day" D-Day campaign.

And thanks to our allies for not aiding us in the Japanese campaign afterwards. leaving us to Nuke them just to end the fucking thing

"Even without the atomic bombing attacks," concluded the United States Strategic Bombing Survey of 1946, "air supremacy over Japan could have exerted sufficient pressure to bring about unconditional surrender and obviate the need for invasion.

"Based on a detailed investigation of all the facts, and supported by the testimony of the surviving Japanese leaders involved, it is the Survey's opinion that … Japan would have surrendered even if the atomic bombs had not been dropped, even if Russia had not entered the war [against Japan] and even if no invasion had been planned or contemplated."

The US Secretary of War, Henry Stimson, told President Truman he was "fearful" that the US Air Force would have Japan so "bombed out" that the new weapon would not be able "to show its strength." Stimson later admitted that "no effort was made, and none was seriously considered, to achieve surrender merely in order not to have to use the [atomic] bomb".

I hate when outsides of America make America look like bullies who love to play cowboy. we dont know what the Japanese would have done. those are just a few "Expert" opinions on war strategy that weren't always right. I mean this guy knew a lot about tactics but he can not say for sure what Japan would or would not have done. They were taking a large crippling Naval fleet to be repaired and jump back in the game.

Hirohito never wanted a war.. he was threatened to be removed from Power had he not gone along. the guy would of said just about anything in saving face for his nation and to stay in power.

those are the people that dictated and guided the war effort you dumb nigger.

The Secretary of War effectively said that they were going to use the atom bombs as a way to threaten the Soviet Union regardless of whether they were necessary to force Japan's surrender (protip: they were already surrendering to the Soviets after their Kwantung army got decimated).

Of course Russia was our enemy. they switched sides after Hitler bulldozed through Poland to the first Russian Front. and Russia had made a pack with Japan when he made one with Hitler in 1939 2 years before Pearl Harbor raid. So the Russians were probably going to become apart of the pacific campaign as well backing Japan. it was a great thing for the US that Hitler fucked over stalin. we would of been battling all these fucks had Japan attacked us with England being over ran and probably systematically every brit would of been killed off.
