that's primarily why they're trying to push Chinese companies out of the 5G market; they don't want to lose the market share because they don't have anything comparable yet.
More what I was alluding to is digital surveillance and data theft. US agencies (specifically the NSA) have been known to transfer data they've intercepted to US companies, and on at least one occasion they used intercepted communications between German (pretty sure it was German) diplomats to improve their bargaining position in a UN resolution.
