It's the thing that gets showed up on the tab and in bookmarks and stuff.

I wanted to rescale [link=http://niggasin.space/static/banners/S1.png]aldra's banner[/link] but it doesn't look so great at 16x16 and 32x32 resolutions.

Requirements are that it be square and look alright at the 16x16 resolution (although it need not be authored at that size, some user agents use different resolutions to render favicos).

It's the little icon that get's shown on the tab in modern browsers before the page title. It's used a few other places, like bookmarks and those things where you can make a bookmark show up on the homescreen of a phone like an app. Mostly it's just useful for guessing what a tab is when you have too many open during a meth binge.
