I'm planning on getting a basic 3D printer for like $800 and I want to make my money back on it. How difficult do you think it would be to make a true profit of $800 using one of these printers? I may be able to get one of these, plus the filament, for 100% free. But I'd still like to make some cash on the side.
Not actually printing out money.

I opened this thread to say counter fitting would work better using the traditional route unless you can find a material that would make it actually feel like money.
As far as ways to make money using a 3D printer some simple ideas would be to print things like phone cases and sell em locally and online. Come up with good designs or offer custom cases. It will be easy enough to find the dimensions to make each case.
I dunno how else to really make tons of money off one of these. I would consider charging people for its use (renting it out) if you really wanna profit. Im sure there are computer nerds in your area who would love to print out some circuit boards or something similar.

Simple things like...
Plasticwear (spoons,forks,knives) Plates. Cups.
All the way to things like polymer handgun receivers and shit like that.
Holsters.

Oh shit, guns...that'd be quite serious trouble. I'm also setting up my cutting machine right now. So I want a bunch of tools to make things to sell, or things that can make other things.

custom parts for things... I know a few guys are doing pretty well making parts for nerf guns, quadcopters and the like, so if you can find a market for similarly low-stress parts you should be able to make some money

Making quad copter frames would actually be pretty good. Could probably even do props and other parts, maybe even make a kit to put together where all you need to get is motors. Kinda be beginner DIY copter.
When I was a youngin I hella nerfed with my pals and we modded the shit out of those fuckers. Custom plunger mechanisms would hit it big time with some people in your area im sure.
You got a lot of potential when you can print 3D to where its pretty much your imagination limiting you.
