You're obviously pretty blinkered about the whole thing then...google the ZX VEGA+ for example, a failed kickstarter project. the plan was for it to have 1000 games on it with copyright permissions. ALL of those permissions were denied after the company started doing shady stuff.
Another one Elite systems, produced a hardware product and App to go with it, failed to pay for those permissions and so the permissions were withdrawn and the app removed from the app store.
These are just 2 of literally thousands of cease and desist situations. It's also not limited to the games industry.
Years ago I used to hack Satellite TV and was part of that community...many of those hackers got cease and desist letters from DirecTV all the time. -
2020-01-31 at 4:15 PM UTCYea but again those were companies who made big headlines about thrmselvs and threw themselves in the limelight, hence why they ahd cease and desist sent at them and they were probably full of entrepreneurs who had the big bucks and were worth being sued over unlike me whose unemployed living in a studio flat. Plus its not like any of them did time for it again.

but what? you said you'd not heard of any other than nintendo...I gave you 3 other examples that you now do seem to be aware of...and again that's 3 examples...there are THOUSANDS of instances...cease and desist letters are a thing.
MANY MANY regular people got cease and desist letters when Napster was around for downloading MP3s as another example. -
