   Saw an article about some cryptocurrency called GridCoin. The idea is that instead of solving useless hashes, it will involve running scientific simulations and it can be used for virtually any computer process.

   Solving hashes for the block chain is far from useless. It puts a cap on bitcoin production which is essential for it to retain it's value, broadly speaking.
