He took that as a sign of disrespect, and started asking if I had a problem, as he was standing right outside my driver door. I stayed in my vehicle, because he would have had the advantage, at his location, had it gotten physical. He stood there for a few minutes, then ran off inside.

Find a small private landlord on craigslist or drive the fuck around until you see a smaller apt or house with a for rent sign. Alot of houses are split up for rentals by the colleges here so thats an option. The reason I say this is because if you are talking face-to-face with the owner more than likely they will give you a chance if you dint come off as a piece of shit.
On another note, the african that stood on the outside of your car and talked shit would have had my .40 S&W up in his fuckin face -

Uhh that's a photo from the Hotel staff and she's probably the lady who inspects the maids work and grades them.
I would pay 10-30 dollars more a night in a city outside of a major city and take a train or uber into the big city if need be.
Holliday inn is way better. they serve breakfast to your hotel (which is nice to splurge twice of what it cost at Dennys)
Also, many hotels will place a mini fridge in at no cost if you ask ahead of time. So buy good quality premade meals and microwave them to warm them up for most of the time you stay> I went to NYC. I said I need a fridge (They said there is already one in there) and I went to this awesome deli. 6 bucks for these massive sandwiches. Meatball and they dont charge extra for nothing (if you buy it later at night..they have special). I'm like.. Fuck I thought NYC everything would be expensive as fuck. I bought 3 of these sandwich with different meats. One was an egg and hamburger and different layers of cheese.
everything they had in this store was like local original small brands. Everything was quality. I filled my fridge and saved shitloads on meals which are expensive in restaurants. I can't find the store on maps but there is another great place called Rockwells near battery park. Same deals. huge sandwiches. 6.95 lunch deals
So you can budget in different ways and spend more on a mid-range hotel. I mean a Motel was like a third of a hotel price. It's about the same now. Usually in the Ghetto.
