How did religion begin?

There are so many theories out there describing the tendencies of early man to explain his inner life and the world around him with spiritual terminology. What in your opinion caused religion to develop the way it did?

Religion began the same way science began. As a way to try and explain the world around us.

ok fine zanick, fine. all of human culture, religion included, are just compulsive behaviors akin to how hamsters in a cage sometimes gnaw their own hair off when stressed. every type of human expression, art, music, 'love', industry, technology, religion, are just a hysterical reaction to various stresses that affected the human race in the distant or recent past. I am thinking of possibly one or more massive population bottlenecks that stressed humanity as a whole, causing changes in our lifestyles, cognition, and physicality.

The aliens appeared from the sky. People didn't know how to explain it, so they called them angels. Then the bad ones came down and shared technology we weren't ready for. And this is all the result of that. By the way, they can easily look just like us and can walk among us without detection.

I think that's the logical starting point, but carries some assumptions regarding their ecology.

Eh, I haven't personally scrutinized the texts referenced by the Ancient Aliens specials but I think a literal interpretation will usually require embellishment.

    Malice Naturally Camouflaged
It could have its roots in schizophrenics, amusingly enough. Recall coming across a rough overview on theories about schizophrenia, how the prevalence is too high to be explained without there being something to offset the natural reproductive disadvantage, shamans in some form being or having been a part of nearly every culture found.

I've actually read some of the bible, up until the last book by Moses (allegedly), where I could bear no more. I have no problem believing these were the product of a deranged madman.
