   Vibration causes a phase shift in a reflected RF wave, so a phase detection circuit would be used along with a low noise amplifier to pick up and recreate conversations in a room. The higher the frequency used, the more accurate it is. As the guy in cryptome pointed out, a passive RF illumination source can be used and the eavesdropper does not need to transmit his or her own signal, only to receive the original signal and compare the phase difference of the reflected signal at different points. It's a pretty simple concept.
