The graphics are simplistic but the difficulty is intense, way tougher than dwarf fortress. I like it much more than Bindings of Issac.
I've been playing this game for 3 years and never made it past the second dungeon because of FUCKING LANDMINES.
You start off completely naked and unarmed with a dog that always gets killed if you bring him along. If you aren't killed by a Giant Hedgehog, Zombie, or a crit Rat decapitation in the first 10mins you can find enough gear to make it to the end of the first dungeon and fight a giant mutant plant.
You can also lose both your legs and continue fighting by crawling and using magic wands and healing potions. You can gain back your limbs by praying to various Gods. My favorite diety is the Destroyer of Worlds who almost always replies to prayers with "PUNY MORTAL, YOU ARE NOT YET WORTHY" and striking you with lightning, but rarely he will provide you with a demonic minion that kills anything in a few moves.
I spent all day yesterday playing this. The only thing that can stop me is random crits, running out of food, booby trap door bombs, hidden Landmines and accidental magic lighting bouncing off the wall and hitting my METAL sword giving me a lethal shock.
