yeah the anime is Berserk, I think it came out in 1997. the guy who wrote it (the story, the comic/manga started in the early 90s and was still going) died the other day - dunno what caused it but he apparently had some kind of medical condition that weakened his aorta to the point where he managed to tear it and bled out internally. sounds like a really rough way to go
