Fuck Mars. Let's go to Venus and make cloud cities.

The outer atmosphere of Venus is the closest thing to an Earthlike environment in terms of gravity, air pressure, temperature.

    Mars is much, much closer.

Venus has a retrograde orbit and has about a third of the orbit time of mars, so a lot of the time it's very far away. Meanwhile Mars, which is closer by about 20 million miles at it's furthest, is more in line with the Earth's orbit and is only opposite to the earth every 2 years.

Thank God people like Elon Musk don't listen to you.

There are black holes out there which are 10 billion times the size of our Sun. Our Sun is like a head of a pin when put against them. A single black hole can easily surpass the space of our entire solar system. These are monsters that are just floating around out there, eating up entire galaxies as they go. Even light itself cannot escape, due to their incredible gravity.

Venus has a retrograde rotation not orbit.

    Wrong.

At their closest, Venus is ~25m miles away, Mars is ~35m miles away.

At its farthest Venus is ~160m miles away and Mars is 250m miles away.

Lando is kinda tokenesque in that regard.

Before we knew how to analyze its atmosphere, many believed that the thick cloud cover meant that we would find Venus a lush, steamy jungle planet

The clouds are extremely thick and dense, and buoyancy benefits IMMENSELY from the square-cube law. A small increase in surface area leads to a much larger increase in volume. So the entire colony could be supported by balloons.

The only problem is the clouds are acidic so the balloons supporting these cities will need to be coated in something corrosion resistant, but we have such films already.

Even if there is a leak, the pressure above the clouds is the same as on Earth so it'll just leak like a cracked door letting out your air conditioning rather than popping like a balloon. But you won't need pressurised suits or structures, which is an enormous benefit that a Venutian cloud city has over Mars.

The Venutian atmosphere also offers protection from cosmic radiation similar to the earth because it's ionosphere creates an induced magnetosphere, which Mars can't because it doesn't have any magnetosphere and has thin atmosphere.

The only suit you'll need is to protect against the atmosphere's corrosion, and to supply you breathable air. This means rather than puffy space suits you can just walk around in what is essentially a a hazmat suit, with perhaps some temperature shielding since the temperature at the level of cloud cities could range from -1C to 51C
