I deliberately decided not to dual boot on the laptop that I am on right now. It is convenient, but too much of a headache. Besides I feel safer having full disk encryption - just for work stuff, I don't have anything illegal.

the /home partition is what you can consider your "c:/users/narc" folder in windows. It contains all your shit. All your files. Pictures, downloads, videos, music, etc. It is good to have a separate /home partition because under certain circumstances, you might need to reinstall Linux. If you have a separate /home partition, your shit is untouched.

isn't this pretty big for an (E) drive? is this already partitioned by any chance?

And then you get to have fun with the hidden config files in your /home/ not jiving with the new OS. Clean install every time for me.

that's what i'm saying tho, i don't store really any files on my hard drive nowadays, not permanently anyway. all my video, music, pix, documents etc are on flash drives. i prolly got like enough flash drives here to store half a TB at least. i prefer keeping the hard drive uncluttered with shit so it can be more efficient running the OS and software.

i always thought your (E) drive was what things like your BIOS was on and that.

Sometimes the E drive or whatever is a restore partition which has been set up by the maker of your laptop. It contains utilities to restore windows in case things go wrong. It's usually fairly safe to nuke it.

You should try to upgrade to an SSD (which is basically a flash drive hard drive) before doing anything. 120GB SSDs are like €20, but are way faster, more reliable and quieter than old style mechanical hard drives.

anyway, what you think of the pic i posted^ why is my (E) drive so big? is that a genuine partition already set up on this machine?

    That's not a partition, it's a separate physical drive

i think it threw me a bit where it was saying 58GBs, when I know the flash is a 64GBs.

it turned out simple as fuck in the end. just ticked the dual boot option in the mint install and had to move the line on a bar to decide how much space to assign to lynux and windows. gave 90 to mint and 70 to windows in the end. and that was it, the computer did the rest pretty much. and all working perfect an all.
