What are you reading?

2015-06-27 at 4:06 AM UTCI'm currently reading "On the road" by Jack Kerouac. I've been taking my time with it, reading in 30 page intervals. It's good, but I feel I really need a taste for travel and adventure before I read it or I don't really appreciate the attitude of the book. Wish I read it before I went hitchhiking.

Lol, I remember seeing Halo books in stores when I was starting high school, even then I was far enough up my own ass to be like "novels based on video games are gayyyyy" even though I read like every one of the 12 or so resident evil novelizations in middleschool (each game had a book, some side characters in games got books, and there were fully original stories that took place between the games. It speaks to how bad the writing was that the books based on games were better than the original works). Anyway, how is it? Do the novels follow the game closely? I remember the games being like 2/3 fighting covenant and 1/3 flood, does the book stick to that? I feel like every level from when MC crash-lands to when you bust into the, uhhh, what was it? That ark? The thing where where there's a dead nigga in the room and you walk in and the door locks and those crawly niggas swarm you. Well that span of the game was just shootem up with basically zero plot, so one wonders who that translated to a novel. "Master chief fired a volley from his assault rifle at an elite, its shield ate most of the impact and it sidestepped behind cover. He sprinted parallel to their strong point in the rocks while his marines advanced and laid down suppressing fire. He flanked the covenant and threw a plasma grenade, sticking an elite and flushing the grunts from cover and right into the marines' suppressive fire" seems like it would get pretty tedious when it happens two dozen times between each plot point.
Anyway, I'm reading Camus' The Stranger. It's kinda ironic that this is supposed to be like the most edgy "nihilistic" (not really, obviously, but it gets taken that way) book but when I'm reading it I think the description of 30s/40s Algeria is so quaint that almost steals the spotlight from Meursault's "absurd struggle" and sociopathy. I'm not sure if that was intentional, to some extent it servers to put the reader in the narrator's shoes because you spend more time focusing on the inanimate objects and places so characters are reduced to less emotional significance (to the reader) than these passive things. I guess it was probably intentional. -
2015-06-27 at 7:40 AM UTCThe Stranger is on my list of books to read, but I keep putting it off because I don't feel any existential anguish no more.
§m£ÂgØL, how'd hitchhiking change your reception of On the Road?
I'm reading that new biography of Elon Musk to figure out what makes that guy tick and whether I should keep my hopes up of seeing Mars during my lifetime. I'm also reading some tool-specific technical books to prepare for my role at a new job. I wish I could read some abstract stuff like Knuth's algorithm books to get my coding standards up but I guess I should just code more. -
2015-06-27 at 9:13 AM UTCReading Knuth, do you mean The Art of Computer Programming? If so, how are you reading it? Like page 1 book 1 and just powering through, or are you looking up specific algorithms that catch your fancy? The series is notoriously dense although I'll be honest, I haven't read a page since well before I was really qualified to understand any of it. So it may turn out to be more approachable than I remember (and perhaps than as described, most people in the field are inept after all so a representation of something as being "hard" or difficult to understand is generally best taken with a grain of salt in my experience.)

Good god, that Ignatious. The unexpected masturbation scene was hilarious. Oh, that dog. -

I don't know, when the author talks about the fun times, the rush and thrill of it all, I can remember that tingly sensation in my hands. When he talks about the shit times, the feeling alone, it's kind of brushed over- but I remember those times too. I remember them well. Hitchhiking is like a rollercoaster, there are highs and lows and taking a ride definitely isn't for everybody. A lot of the romance of hitchhiking has been lost on me after experiencing the utter lows of being lost and trapped and wondering why the fuck you got yourself into that mess.
But at the same time, the highs are really, really fucking high. -

I actually just heard about the stranger myself yesterday. I'm going to get a copy from the library later today. Right now I'm reading stephen kings the dark tower -
2015-07-03 at 5:05 AM UTCNot reading anything right now, but if I were, it'd be creepypasta.

2015-07-15 at 10:52 PM UTCI read Your Heart belongs to me by Dean Koontz and You've been warned by James Patterson last night(the electric was off for 23 hours) both good reads, though I slightly prefer James Patterson's book. Nothing too mind blowing really, but I've been reading for a long time. If you want something really easy to read and just be entertained I'd highly suggest them both.
