   Eh, I think they had the best character models but because the way the armor system worked (hit detection is not localized, it's an all-or-nothing dice roll where the sum of armor negates) losing out out boots and most helms plus the slots for enchantments, plus the disposition hit you take with dunmer (the half the characters in the game) doesn't really justify them in a mechanics-sense. Athletics bonus is good just because you spend so much time running places but you can grind that up with any character or train it up with gold. Like in all the games, unmodded unarmed combat is garbage so that bonus is just a throw-away.
