All the dudes open carrying are doing is breaking your illusion of safety. You should already be carrying a gun if you genuinely care about your safety and have the option to do so. And really, this discussion is about OPEN CARRY CULTURE. And specifically, everything I've said has been about fostering a wider culture of open carry - a culture in which people don't piss their pants when they see a gun. You're being deliberately obtuse if you don't grasp that after this. Retard.

How about if you realize guns are a force equalizer that keep 250lb 6'5" dudes who are jacked as fuck on the same playing field as a 110lb girl? How about if the amount of actual guns in the room is not a question that needs to be considered because everyone has one and it's no big deal?

And I'm not even saying people should carry because they should be scared already (although they really should be). They should be carrying, and familiar with firearms, as a part of their moral duty to protect each other. I'm a bit of an anarchist like that - I believe in collective self-defense, and I don't really sympathize will people who are too scared to own a gun, and by association scared of anyone who does because that person is necessarily more powerful than them (when it's their choice not to equalize that power imbalance because they're too pussy to have a gun). :^)

Open carry is awesome, but if I thought I could get away with it I would dress up as a barbarian and carry a war axe, so I might not be the best person to make decisions about how the world should work.

This assumption fear is involved is really rather silly. Again it's about being prepared...just like taking an umbrella with you on a cloudy day. You are not scared of getting wet, you are simply preparing yourself in case it rains.

Also if the sight of a weapon scares you that's also rather silly. A person who is open carrying has a license (in the vast majority of cases), as such they have had training, know the law and are viewed as "one of the good guys". If you are in Walmart and see a 60yr old dude looking at socks with a piece on his hip he's probably safer than some random dude on the street at 11pm who isn't open carrying. VERY few open carry people have committed firearm crimes.

    Logic, it's what's for elevenses.

Even minus weapons your concept of safety only extends as far as someone isn't willing to claw your throat out. What we are talking about is not an illusion of safety but simply what is acceptable to display socially, and how that affects people's expectations of safety.

The only thing open carrying does is confirm your small penis. A CCW culture means that EVERY citizen is potentially armed. Period. The root of this disagreement is still this stupid claim:

Optimally everyone would familiarize themselves with firearms and become comfortable with the idea of seeing them in public (open carry culture)

No. Optimally nobody would display their firearms but everybody would be free to carry one. Open carry is retarded.

How about if you realize guns are a force equalizer that keep 250lb 6'5" dudes who are jacked as fuck on the same playing field as a 110lb girl? How about if the amount of actual guns in the room is not a question that needs to be considered because everyone has one and it's no big deal?

Why do you need to show everyone and what benefit does it give anyone if the number is known AND exactly who it is?

Between two societies with the exact same number of guns but the only difference is OC vs CC being the norm, you can still roughly count on a particular number of people in a room having those guns, you just don't know exactly how many and who has one. It could be the skinny girl or the huge guy. You simply lose the positive benefits of not confirming that information. For all you know the number could be 100%.

Then no one would feel like they have to carry one because it's all the same unless a situation arises where you actually need to start shooting.

What's really scary is we already live in that world, and it's not because of people with guns. It's because some people are old and frail, some people are petite, and some people are fuckhuge and have bad intentions. Because some people have knives.

What's scary is that you believe you have a statistically significant chance of being the victim of a crime where displaying that you have a gun would save you... In all likelihood you are going to become more of a target because guns are real easy to fence.

And I'm not even saying people should carry because they should be scared already (although they really should be). They should be carrying, and familiar with firearms, as a part of their moral duty to protect each other. I'm a bit of an anarchist like that - I believe in collective self-defense, and I don't really sympathize will people who are too scared to own a gun, and by association scared of anyone who does because that person is necessarily more powerful than them (when it's their choice not to equalize that force because they're too pussy to have a gun). :^)

That's pretty much irrelevant to the fact that open carry is objectively inferior to concealed carry in every single way on every single level.

People who buy/carry guns illegally don't historically (in the USA) walk around with them on open display. Again those you see open carry are trained and licensed in the vast majority of cases and not a threat in any way.

In an open carry culture, how do you know if they're licensed or not?

You would have to create a social acceptance of "papers please" to enforce licensing on openly displayed firearms, where cops harass citizens with open carry to make sure it's all legit.

But if you don't do that, then what's to stop someone from illegally open carrying a firearm without a license?

It literally inverts the benefit of a CCW culture.

Why wouldn't they if everyone with a legal gun did so?

Unless you want the cops to stop people open carrying and check their papers. And I really don't want to go down that road to fascism.
