But you're doing it anyway. So the social pain of shame is simply an additional cost you are choosing to pay unnecessarily by holding this set of unjustified beliefs, as I will demonstrate shortly. Why? There are no stakes. The shame is what's supposed to drive you back to normal but you haven't justified why it is that you "should" follow that emotional impetus. Presumably it's to avoid the pain of being ashamed, but in that case it's more like overcoming stagefright because that is ultimately nothing beyond an anxiety in your mind. I thought that was something people outgrew when they were like... 12 and learnt about peer pressure. What has shame ever actually done for you?
