Sooner or later, a religion cannot be entirely peaceful. It doesn't magically stay intact the way it was when it was created, it's a construct that changes over time depending on the remaining people that practice it. The only reason buddhism is still around is because people ironically fought to preserve it as a religion.
Elsewhere, Muslims would've blown up every buddhist shrine or temple, and subjugated/converted all remaining buddhists. -
