    Your friend doesn't want to quit, he just doesn't want alcohol affecting his life negatively.
    That's the problem with addiction, if you're an addict you have to psychological shape yourself so that you no longer desire the experience of the drug otherwise you'll just keep winding back or live the rest of your life miserable and craving the high.
