put a ceramic razor under a bandaid if you think you might actually need it.

As a weapon, a knife is a poor deterrent and you have to actually be willing to kill if you draw it, because if you're not the other person is likely to take it and use it on you when you hesitate. I read a while back that in the military, something like 90% of knife attacks were assassinations, ie. a person was attacked and killed by surprise before they had a chance to respond or defend.

If you do have to use it and manage to come out unscathed, you're likely to have killed or seriously wounded the other person and the police are going to drop the hammer on you (especially if you're white, male and over 18). There are much better options.

I'm from Australia and our laws are fairly similar but I believe they're pursued more aggressively in Europe because they have more knife-related crime and are too afraid to go after the root causes.

Wow, that’s just so odd to me. When I was a kid I was a tomboy, my Dad gave me an old pocketknife and I carried it around with me in my pocket all the time. They’d probably freak in the UK if a kid brought a knife to school, much like a gun here.

Not always. For example, I'm an expert knife thrower. I could get two boot knives buried to the hilt in you before you took two steps toward me. That's gotta at least slow a person down.

Yeah, it's fucking dumb. As far as I know we've never really had a problem with it here, but the police get virtually any power they like with very little oversight. I believe back in the 90s you were allowed to carry a knife with a blade less than 2 inches or so.

Life is too comfortable for most people to care about frivolous things like rights and civil liberties. Statistically, something like 80% of all 'knife crime' is committed with kitchen knives but they've made ridiculous things like automatic and double-bladed knives illegal under that premise. Have a look into the UK's ridiculous demonisation of dumb shit like 'zombie knives' when kids with fucking drain-o are doing significantly more damage.

Even if this were true (Hibbin wrote the book on knife throwing and he claims a 70-80% hit rate) you live in Canada; I don't think you'd get off on self-defence - my last paragraph about the long dick of the law ruining your life still applies, and you would've been better off using a baton, stun device or mace for example.

Some guy shot a dude on his farm in Saskatchewan with a fucking Tokarev and got off, although he claimed it was a hang fire that miraculously blew a guys head off. Juries are a helluva drug.

I assume he had a license for that though?

I mean if you were throwing knives at an 'intruder' on your own property sure, but we're talking about carry here so I mean more along the lines of someone threatening you on the street, and you responding (lethally) with something the law says you shouldn't be carrying in the first place.

Don't you think most people would back down if you had a gun or a knife though?

Alright aldra, given the context I'll say yeah the long dick of the law would find a home.

What like pull it out but not intend to go the distance? Shit happens fast, hesitation isn't good.

A gun's a different story because you can keep them out of arm's reach; unless you're already touching penises there's not much they can do, regardless of how strong or fast they are to take it from you. It also doesn't matter who's holding it - even a child or an old woman can punch holes in you, it's just point and click.

With a knife the difference in your physical fitness comes into play; there's nothing stopping them from coming close enough to take it from you if you're making threats and not prepared to actually use it. The kind of people who'd seriously threaten you on the street probably have a knife or some other weapon of their own anyway. Threatening them might work, but there's a significant chance it won't.

The biggest thing for me is the last part; the legal repercussions afterwards. You can't just walk away from it, there WILL be blood everywhere and even if I don't go to jail, I don't want to spend the next 5 years of my life in and out of court because some assmaster attacked me.

FYI if it were legal I would often carry a small knife, not as a weapon. Sometimes if my girlfriend is working late or something I would give her an extendable baton to keep in her handbag just in case - it's just as illegal as carrying a knife but much easier for someone not physically imposing to use, and leaves much less aftermath to deal with.

So is there much illegal gun trafficking? What would be the punishment if you were found with a gun?

This is just so foreign to me.

yea, like people dont have hesitations when trying to pull the trigger. carrying weapons for self defense is the same irregardless of whether its a fire or non-firearm or even bear hands.

you have to be prepared to use it to inflict maximum damage. also, knives are not an ideal self defense weapon if you live in a place with high incidences of hiv infection.

the last thing you want is to get aids from your own knife that you stabbed someone with but left it in there who then use it to stab you back.
