Where were you when all email providers suddenly became shite?

2019-02-08 at 12:26 AM UTCGMail used to be simple to understand, easy to use, straightforward, etc.
This is a complete shoah of a user design experience.
I don't even know what I'm at. I'm clicking at UI elements that are floating in and out. The icons are tiny and confusing.
My protonmail account doesn't load on my Chrome 72.
My Zohomail account suddenly spawned several categories in which to misclassify emails, and is shit beyond belief (it's Indian, so that makes sense, but it didn't used to be like that).
In 2019 can no one do email correctly and simply? -

The trend with designing websites seems to be to use symbols for everything instead of actual words. I’m assuming it’s easier than translating everything into a bunch of languages, but it’s annoying cause I never know what most of them mean. If you’re lucky you can hover over them and see what they’re for but it’s a pain in the ass. -

2019-02-08 at 10:39 PM UTCGmail has really gone full retard with the mystery meat icons. Like maybe I could understand it on a phone (not really, but I'd at least know _why_) but look at how much realestate I have here:
Why in the fuck do I have slowly hover my mouse over this lineup of icons every time I want to do something just a little outside of my normal workflow? There used to be text there, it worked amazingly, I could use my prestigious third grade education to read the words and understand what these stupid buttons are supposed to do as opposed to squinting at runes hoping that "box with down arrow" does what I think it does.
I fucking amazes me that some of the best paid designers in the world produced this garbage.
They also abuse browser focus in unholy ways so I can never just use my normal keyboard shortcuts to navigate, every time I switch to gmail I have to recall their custom set of hotkeys and shit

I gave thunderbird an honest go the other day but it has its own bag of issues. One of the most annoying is super high latency, I don't know if gmail doesn't support IMAP or they intentionally gimp it but it's like POP3 speeds of fetching. It took me like 3 hours of fucking around with a css file burried deep in the bowles of the application to get text to render at a reasonable size. It still doesn't seem to understand the idea of "archive" which has existed for a many many years now. Working with multiple accounts is a pain in the neck and it always defaults to replying from the "primary" account (how if decided that account was primary I'll never know) rather than the account the email was directed to so professional contacts get email from my personal account if I don't remember to switch it which is mildly embarrassing.
User was banned for saying the taboo phrase "bird"! -

2019-02-09 at 6:38 AM UTCWrong. betabet based writing systems require objectively less entropy-per-word than ideographic writing systems employing adult level vocabularies. Just because a writing system has many thousands of glyphs doesn't make it information dense.

ermm, maybe thats because you couldnt read chinese ?
i have no problem reading the chinese part but had to squint to read the english part because the printer had to reduce the font size of the english text to match the length of their chinese counter part.
ill admit chinese is harder to write and take longer if your unskilled but its very easy to read and scan thru an entire page. -
