   I may be wrong but I think the subscriber has to pay for the dish and if service is cancelled the dish stays

   No, not necessarily.
   
   The dish does stay but UPS arrives and drops off a big box with an instruction sheet that says: remove dish from pole, package as instructed in enclosed letter, and ship to company. WTF
