Right now just gold and silver with a small savings account.

I think the dollar will crash in the next 40 years.

I want to get a state job so I can start planning my retirement.

I put $100 towards my Roth IRA, buy another share of each of the stocks I hold if I can (or if it's smart to do so at that time), and what's left goes into a high interest savings account. I make all my monthly purchases on my highest interest cash back credit card and pay it off in full at the end of each month. I collect up the cash back over the course of the year and either have a badass Christmas spending fund or I will let it ride over another year and have a nice anniversary trip.

Why do you need a state job to start planning your retirement?

Can you provide an example? Most private sector jobs pay more than their public sector equivalents. Pensions are shit, unstable, and unreliable. As far as job security, I have friends who have been fired from municipal jobs and had to do complete career reboots. Not saying they didn’t deserve it, but job security anywhere is an illusion.

Usually, after getting paid, I whittle away at my earnings gradually until my account hits zero or I'm paid again. Never does a cent see a savings account. Coffee is a major expenditure.

How I live my life, add in that my payments don't really have a schedule and random bouts of soul crushing apathy with little activity and I'm pretty much always broke.
