The jedis went around telling everyone how they were personally elected by God and their God was the only real God and also 100% real, and everyone believed it. The jedi's biggest asset is their pushiness and incredible ability to puff up their own (often marginal) accomplishments.
Even in the realm of science this is a thing - most jedi scientists just collate the work done by others, form a thesis, push it hard, and hope it works out. And it often works.
