i always thot it was a volunteer thing.
typically they get supplies, equipment and salaries from gulf states like Saudi Arabia (often funneled directly from the US and UK).
People volunteer to join and get paid salaries to fight. I used to have data on how much ISIS and other rebel groups were paid (less than 20% of the rebels in Syria are actually from Syria) but I don't know if I saved it. -

the way i see it is :
if their motivation to fight is mainly money, then their mercenaries.
if their main motivation to fight is something else, then their something else.
jihadhists, crusaders, communists, nazis etc etc. -

its like they tell them that in return for fighting god will pay them with life. for every day they fight god will pay them 1 day of life. and when god doesn't want them to fight anymore he will not pay them with anymore days of life, in which case they can then stop fighting.
