Lora stands for LOng RAnge. By now everyone has noticed that wifi is pretty weak, unless you use directional antennas, etc.
I've got two cheap Lorawan shields for arduino, so I tested them out. The both come with little antennas and require very little power. Driving around with maximum "spread", which allows 50 bps, very well, even past slight hills. Radiowaves will tend to refract over obstacles, which is why your mobile phone will work even when you're not in a line of sight of a cell-tower.
I found they worked well as far as I have tested so far with line of sight, using just the little built in antennas.
As it's cheap and unlicensed it's definitely a technology I can recommend for applications like telemetry, etc.
