The first online thread ever about the topic of monetary tipping

If you tip, and I'm guessing most of you do, do you do it because you think your person you tip genuinely deserves it, or do you do it because of a sense of obligation or guilt if you didnt do it? In other words, do you tip servers, cabbies, bartenders, pizza boys etc to make them happy, or to make yourself happy?

There are 9,000 dynamics of this to delve into deeper regardless of your answer, but you have to start somewhere.

one quick example out of those 9,000 is why it's in a general sense (at least around here) to tip a bartender a dollar a drink, even if it's just them opening a bottle of beer for you. It's just kinda standard. One dollar for twisting a bottle cap off a bottle, and that's CUSTOMARY. But no tips for the McDonalds burger flippers who quite honestly are probably doing just as much work as a bartender during the course of their shift. That's strange to me. Explain it.

    Thanks.

I only tip out of guilt. If servers were actually paid minimum wage I would only ever give a tip if the service was EXTRAORDINARY, which is the way it's supposed to be

You tip as a way of saying "sorry that your life sucks". If they work in a place that doesn't accept tips, like McDonalds or something, then it sucks really bad, and therefore the quality and cleanliness of the food is questionable. Have you seen who works at McDonalds?

So yeah, if I order a pizza, I tip the delivery guy. He makes minimum wage, and has to use his own car to deliver it to you. His car ends up smelling like rotten pizza grease over time, and the car overall needs more frequent service. The mainstream pizza places don't really compensate much for mileage and gas. Have you seen pizza drivers on the road? Over here the cops do NOT bother them. They WILL fly to your house as fast as possible.

I don't judge the people who work jobs like these either, god will judge them. I don't know what circumstances they're in that they're working such jobs. Who knows, maybe you'll work a job like that at some point for whatever reason. What goes around, comes around.

I will also say, that if I go to a place that I frequent, I get a noticeable increase in service quality because they already know that I will tip either way. I believe this is their way of saying "thank you for making my life suck less, I will try to do my absolute best for you". Anyone who expects low-income workers to try their absolute best 100% of the time is delusional. People with such perseverance don't typically end up working jobs like these, especially if you take into account shitty management and places that are understaffed due to various delinquents working there.

I tip a lot more than I should. If I get really good service I’ll tip up to 40%. “Ok” service gets 30%. Even if they’re really bad I’ll still give about 20% because they might have just been having a bad day.

If the server is male, take the above sliding scale and reduce by 5-8%.

Honestly I think tipping is a stupid system, but it’s what we got so. Really, the people they work for should just pay them more. Just another method corporate America uses to fuck you

I mean, sure the system allows people on minimum wage to make a bit extra, but what about all the industries that aren't able to make tips? People receiving tips will lobby against the system being improved because they feel they can make more through mandatory tipping than enforced minimum conditions, seems like a pretty effective case of divide and conquer

The only reason I tip is because, in the US, restaurants are allowed to pay servers below minimum wage because of the tips.

Yeah but say if the employee doesn’t end up earning minimum wage with their combined salary + tips, the business has to compensate the employee and make up the difference so that they make at least minimum wage. It’s illegal for them not to. At least in most jurisdictions it works this way.

But some companies do some shady shit. I used to make $4.50 in a “tipped” position, when minimum wage was like $8.50. But it was the night shift and I hardly ever got tips. So when I got my paycheck every 2 weeks, it would say something like this:

    $4.50/hr x 80 hours = $360
    +
    $320 tips

    Total = $680.

Basically they had no idea how much I actually earned in tips, but they would report on every paycheck that I made EXACTLY enough tips to hit the minimum wage mark. When really I would make less than half that, maybe a third.

So in addition to getting paid dog shit, I would also be getting taxed on money I wasn’t making lmao. Just so the company wouldn’t get in trouble for not paying me minimum wage.

And you KNOW every restaurant does this. Dumbest shit I've ever seen, and part of the reason that I don't go to restaurants very often
