Youtube went to shit when they did away with the 10 minute limit - it stopped being about people having fun and became way more commercial.
And anyone remember google videos - it used to be great for pirating full movies and getting free lectures.
Youtube survived the early days by burning through tons of investor cash. They were one of those startup that is happy to lose money in order to develop a product and get popular enough to sell out to one of the big boys - an exit.
