It's not uncommon for something to be test marketed outside of the area it was mostly developed in (in this case, tech and Palo Alto area)

but Waco Texas? why.. because Georgie has to have first crack at it?

Dallas, Texas; Waco, Texas; and Atlanta. will be the cities to test market 5G mobile internet.

I can see Atlanta Ga which probably aided in the making of it as Dallas.

Waco? I know Bush has a compound out there.. but so did the Davidians.

I read a few years ago that wireless phone network technology had basically peaked and we wouldn’t see anything like “5G” for at least 10-15 years and it would only be incrementally better

i've taken quite an interest in business and particularly the tech scene for years now. i'm regularly on techcrunch and everything.

and maybe if you'd been regular on techcrunch then you wouldn't have got fobbed off with fake news.

I didn’t believe it obviously. But it was on a major publication. If anything it just reinforced my lack of faith in news media and my belief that most journalists don’t know jack shit about what they report on, they just spit out what they think will get the most clicks

so how long ago did you read that? don't you suppose it could still be a few years before your city has good 5g coverage, and you owning a phone with the right radio?

    Like 3 years ago maybe.

It’s not gonna take 7-12 more years, and it will supposedly be up to 10x faster

you should read pando if that's the case, though I don't think they offer free access to their articles anymore.

last I checked what they're now calling 5G is mostly just a protocol spec upgrade from HSDPA, specifically targeting video traffic - they're able to compress high-resolution video further now that modern phones are able to decode it in realtime

I see. I feel like it could be 7yrs out before most umericans are on it - theres not even a very specific definition for what it is yet , it just sounds like a Trump pitch: its gonna be so fast, so stable, so reliable.

I get the need for higher speeds in the fure, when people will want to stream 4k content.. But why do you really need 4k on a tiny phone or tablet display?

Plus its gonna use extremely high frequencies (not the right technical term probably) which suck at penetrating buildings even more than the current microwave frequencies in use. Which IMO is the major shortcoming of what we have currently, dropping calls or shitty data speeds inside buildings.

Current 4G technologies can give great bandwidth, but that isn't useful for long when they throttle you after a few gigs.

It’s not just about “4K streaming” or whatever the fuck. It’s about progress. We will always need more data, more bandwidth. Because that’s what evolution is now. In a thousand years people aren’t gonna be streaming 4K Netflix to their tablets, they’re going to be downloading petabytes of information to their brain implants.

What does 5g going to do to address the shortcomings we have with 4G? how does using higher frequencies gonna help from dropping a call in a building or slow porn buffering in the bathroom??

Its a scam! pry my 4g lte and HSPA+ from my cold hands. 5g is just going to be a passing fad

i guess people with 5g phones that work downtown will all have to use their breaks going up to the roof where they can get line-of-sight on their carriers antennas to download all their missed messages and youtube que

4G was supposed to be long term, and able to be upgraded without breaking old equipment.

5G sounds like marketing bullshit. Its supposed to use 20-60ghz microwaves - those don't penetrate walls. Its most likely an attempt to brand something like cellular broadband with a cool name rather can calling it Wimax 2.0

I once had a friend who thought that once 4G came out his computer would get faster.
