   I wonder if there's a way to definitely become a ghost? I mean it often sounds like people who die violent deaths have a better chance of being ghosts than those who die peacefully.

   I think you have to be a little girl wearing an old-timey gown and either get hit by a car on a remote stretch of a heavily wooded area, or live in a large, aging house on the outskirts of town and get savagely murdered by a family member.
