purely interface keyboard?

   a friend of mine is living in a hellhole of depression, and to pass the time, she wants to get a keyboard; she doesn't have the money to buy a high quality one, and i might have less on hand.
   i was thinking of a cheap casio, but these still cost upwards of one hundred dollars, and reading through them, i can see they have a built in midi interface and audio reproduction system, and metronome, and even this play-along system... are there any cheap keyboards that just send a midi signal, sort of?

   I know CocoRosie has implemented children's musical toys into their music, and done it well. There are bound to have been other bands that have done it. Get experimental.
