So I told her, "There's actually a way you can do that."
"Really?"
"Yeah. It's called being charitable. Why don't you donate all the money you would be willing to pay extra in taxes to a local homeless shelter or addiction program? 100% of it will go directly to people in need."
She stammered a bit and then brushed off the suggestion. She wasn't willing to put her money where her mouth is, but was more than willing to throw around other people's money.
And that is exactly my problem with communism. When you tax the shit out of people, you are rob them of the freedom to choose how they want to spend their money. This in turn discourages people from working hard to fulfill their dreams of making a good living. It also does nothing to empower those who receive handouts, and enables people to be more careless in their life choices because "muh social safety net" (Welfare, foodstamps, housing assistance, etc.).
Now, I'm all for social programs, charities, and such. Especially as a Christian. They simply should not be run by the government. Let private citizens look after each other and fill in the gaps. It will create a much stronger, healthier sense of community anyway. I understand this may not run as smoothly as it ought to should governmental aid be abolished tomorrow, but that issue is rooted in a deeper concern - namely the destruction of the family unit (something communism also purports).
Just allow people to be free. -

Second of all, you have to literally be 5 years old to seriously use the taxation-is-theft line of argument, and think it can be replaced with charity. The fact is that you live in a fucking society. Nothing you do is in a vacuum. Every single penny you've made has come off the back of public infrastructure. For every generous person like me, there will be a greedy jedi like you, who isn't willing to pay back in. You didn't magically pull the spirit of industry out of your asshole.
Third I already do a fuck load of charity, but the point of taxation and social programs isn't "charity". This is just a fundamentally retarded statement that displays the silly mindset you are in. The point of social programs is to establish a baseline for the standard of living in a fucking country so you can't starve and go homeless in the US of A in 2017.

I watched a video that suggested jobs like mine (skilled trades) will be among the last to become automated. Do you think that will be good or bad for me? On one hand, I will be among the last of the schmucks who works an actual job... but on the other hand I will be earning more than the average pleb. What are your thoughts on that? -

You probably don't need to worry about automation any time soon as a tradesman. Or even as anyone with any good job at all. As I've said throughout this thread, a largely automated economy with UBI and social programs to create a minimum, and ever rising, standard of living is the endgame.
Realistically, the trades aren't going anywhere any time soon; there are a lot of other areas where automation will yield faster, better results, and they will be the first to go.
For example, look at Amazon's Just-Walk-Out thing. Retail work is straight up a shit job. Nobody needs to do it in the current age, it is an economically meaninglessness, retarded waste of time. I'd rather take the profits made from not employing workers to man checkout stations, and just giving them to the people who would have worked in those positions if they are willing yk go and get a degree and work in those fields, or go to a trade school. -

I never said taxation = theft. Some taxation is, but certainly not all. I'm not an AnCapper.
Yes, I sincerely believe social programs can be replaced by private charities. It's more complicated than simply abolishing social programs and letting society sort itself out, however. A good starting place would be fortifying the family unit so we don't have 80 somewhat percent of niggers running around without fathers.

I'm glad you donate to charity, I do as well and think everyone should as they are able. Social programs are a form of charity, sure, but a shitty one at that. Charities need to be privatized. The government should have nothing to do with them, except in the instances of insane asylums where people become wards of the state.
As for a baseline standard of living, no one owes you jack shit. You are not entitled to a house, three meals a day, clean water, etc. You must earn all of that, and only then will you truly be grateful for what you have. If you can't, yes, you will go homeless and potentially starve to death. To get to that point you must be a true degenerate, however, and deserve your fate.
Now, that's not to say I'm against helping the poor. Charities exist as a safety net for an individual who is temporarily down on his luck and has exceeded the resources of his family and friends. The problem with governmental programs is that they not only diminish the sense of community among citizens by placing care in the hands of the state, but enable perpetual degeneracy and the poor decisions that got the person in trouble in the first place.
