Lots of countries make excellent fighter jets. Try SAAB of Sweden. UK, France and Germany all make/made their own planes too.
Alternatively they could focus on improving already proven designs. The F35 was made to fail anyways, the future of air superiority lies in anti-aircraft and anti-missile defences as well as drones. The most expensive part of a fighter jet is still the trained pilot.
Even then there's no need for such air superiority. Any enemy that America's been dealing with in the past 70 years could've been dealt with just as easily, and more cost effectively, with WWII fighter planes. Hell, a few years back America almost brought back the P51 mustang as a ground attack fighter to replace the A10 warthog.
US military spending is insane. They could learn a lot from Russia, who has 1/8 the military budget of the US, but still rivals the US when it comes to military capability. This actually fucks the US in an all out war, because their military doesn't know how to operate without a budget. Though I guess in Russia they roam the countryside kidnapping farm boys for the motherland. -

A10 is still overkill for majority of missions. A10 is made for attacking convoys of Russian armoured columns. You'll find no such thing in Afghanistan in this day and age. When attacking single infantry of attacking squads of soldiers, you need something slower so you have more time to aim. They needed something that could stick around in the area for much longer while providing extremely close support to special forces on the ground. The A10 is too big and bulky for this. Jet planes use too much fuel too quickly at those low speeds.
The USAF adopted the Brazilian made A29 Super Tucano for this role. Yes, the USAF recently adopted a simple propeller plane for combat.
Even then, when it comes to jet fighters, they can learn a lot from the Russian MIG programs. If waste of taxpayer money was corruption, America would be the most corrupt country in the world.
